How To Overcome Anxiety
Let's talk about anxiety.
Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, or uneasiness that occurs due to negative/stressful situations. We may feel anxiety about our finances, relationships, or life in general.
Constant anxiety can lead to physical (lack of sleep, stomachaches, headaches, etc.) and emotional (impulsivity, insecurity, depression, etc.) problems.
As Christians, we learn that the root of anxiety is a lack of trust in God's plan for our lives. 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us to walk by faith and not by sight meaning how we feel and act should be based on what we believe God for not on what we see in front of us. Unfortunately this is easier said than done when facing obstacles that look impossible to overcome.
How can we not be anxious when our bank account does not have enough money to pay our bills for the month? How can we not be worried when the doctor gives us bad news? How can we not be stressed when our partner is acting suspicious?
John 14:27
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
3 Ways to Overcome Daily Anxiety
1. Prayer- making it a habit to immediately pray as soon as you feel anxious, can allow you to knowledge and sort through your feelings with God. Sometimes we find that we are anxious over things that we do not need to be, for example, stressing about a trip that is months away. In prayer, give the situation completely to Him and let the peace of God calm your mind. Phillippians 4: 6-7
2. Removal- evaluate the areas in your life that trigger anxiety. This could be something as significant as a family member/relationship or something as small as the type of music we are listening to or the people we are following. Of course, there are anxiety inducing situations that we may not be able to remove ourselves from such as a job or school. Spending time daily in the Word of God and surrounding yourself with people and things that glorify Him, will help to greatly reduce your anxiety, no matter what you're going through. Isaiah 26:3
3. Faith- as we discussed earlier, the root of anxiety is a lack of trust in God's plan for our lives. It is human nature to desire control, which makes it difficult to submit our struggles and worries to Christ. Therefore, it is extremely important that we work to increase our faith in God, which will significantly reduce the daily anxiety we experience. A great way to do so is to study the lives of those in the Bible, and how God moved their situations. Also, remembering the situations that God has brought us through in the past can help provide encouragement that He will do the same in the present. Write a list of all the obstacles in your life that God allowed you to overcome, especially the ones that you believe were impossible to resolve. Whenever you're feeling anxious, read through this list to remind yourself of what God can do. Isaiah 41:10
