Finding Your Strength In God

Finding Your Strength In God

Let's talk about strength.
Strength is the capacity to withstand great force or pressure. As Christians, we go though many obstacles in life that require strength to overcome. Sometimes we find ourselves looking for strength in other things instead of God which leads to difficulties in our journey.
David, in the Bible, shows a great example of what it means to seek strength in God during a time of hardship that we never really talk about. Years after David defeated Goliath and years before he became king, David went through a very difficult period. Saul, who was king at the time, became jealous of David replacing him. Therefore, for years he chased David to kill him.
For a very long time, David was constantly on the run for fear of his life, which took a toll. He slowly but surely lost faith that God would work out his situation, so he started finding his strength in other things (1 Samuel 27:1)
This lead to him being in the company of a group of ungodly people called the Philistines. The Philistines were a known enemy of the Israelites (David's home). David sought refuge and strength in these people which led to him leading a life of sin.
He became a bandit who raided and killed many people (1 Samuel 27:8-9). David also got to the point where he almost fought in the army of the Philistines to attack his home.
God had to bring David to the lowest of lows for him to realize he was trying to find strength in the wrong things instead of the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6).
Once David found his strength in God, he was able to overcome his situation and live out the purpose God called for him, eventually becoming king of Israel. To this day, he is known as being one of the greatest leaders of this kingdom.

Psalms 73:26

"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

What Can We Learn From David?

Like most of us, David went though a point in life that was really hard. He was constantly scared of losing his life while having to leave his home.

In moments like this, it is easy to lose confidence in God and turn to other things for the strength to overcome.

As we discussed, this NEVER leads to a good outcome. David became a robber and murderer while in the company of the wrong people. He became distant from God and weaker than ever.

Here Are 2 Ways to Find Strength In God

It is important that we grasp that the only strength that can actually strengthen us comes from the Lord. Nothing else can provide the same fulfillment and peace.

1. Faith- Ask God to increase your trust in Him during hard times. This could look like journaling when you feel like giving up, going into prayer when you are confused, or reading about the rewards that characters in the Bible had due to their faith. Trusting God enough to turn to Him in distress is great way to find strength in Him. Hebrews 11:1

2. Centering- Having your life completely centered on Christ will help you to avoid seeking strength in other things. Making God a habit instead of a hobby will make it more difficult to go outside of Him. A great way to do this is getting involved in your local church. Filling your free time with things that honor and glorify God, will help to keep your mind on Him. Also having a group of people around you that encourage you to keep God at the center of your life is very beneficial. 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Finding Strength In God

 Recap

It is dangerous to seek strength in things other than God. It can lead us down the wrong path and make us miss out on all the blessings God has for us. Therefore it is important that every day we seek to find our strength in God. By centering our life around Him and working to increase our faith, we can have the confidence that God will allow us to overcome any obstacle we face.

Also, as a born again filled with the Spirit Christian, you are God’s temple, you are strength with might in your inner man by the Spirit of God. So meditate and study the Scriptures, you’ll receive strength from the Word

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬
16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
