Overcoming Secular Music
Music has a way of shaping our hearts and minds. As Christians, we are called to guard our hearts above all else. The music we listen to is no exception. Today, we’re reflecting on secular music: how it influences us and how we can make choices that honor God with what we allow into our lives.
Proverbs 4:23 (NIV): “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
How to Overcome Secular Music
Secular music is everywhere—from the radio to social media. While not all secular music is inherently bad, many songs promote values that don’t align with our faith.
- The Impact: Research shows music affects our emotions and thoughts. As Christians, we should ask: Does this song glorify God?
-
Questions to Consider:
- What’s the message in the lyrics?
- How does it influence your mood, thoughts, and behavior?
- Is it drawing you closer to God or distracting you from Him?
- Encouragement: Replace songs that don’t build your faith with uplifting alternatives.
Practical Steps
- Pray for Guidance: Ask God to reveal what changes He’s calling you to make.
- Set a Goal: Replace one secular song a day with a Christian one.
- Create a New Playlist: Fill it with worship and faith-filled songs that uplift your spirit.
- Stay Accountable: Share your journey with a friend or small group.
