Article: Discerning God from Not God

Discerning God from Not God

Discerning God from Not God

In a world filled with competing voices, how can we discern God’s truth from deception? Jesus tells us that His sheep recognize His voice. But to do so, we must be intimately acquainted with Him. Let’s explore how to sharpen our discernment and walk in His truth.

Biblical Insights: What the Scriptures Say About Discernment

John 10:27:My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me."

How do we Discern what is God?

Knowing God's Character: God is consistent in His nature—holy, loving, just, and merciful. Anything that contradicts these attributes is not from Him. Scripture reveals who He is, so we must immerse ourselves in His Word to recognize His presence and leading.

Testing the Spirits: 1 John 4:1 instructs us, "Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God." Any teaching, revelation, or guidance should align with the Word of God. If it distorts or contradicts Scripture, it is not from Him.

The fruit of the Spirit vs the works of the flesh: Jesus said, "You will recognize them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16). The Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). If something leads to confusion, pride, division, or sin, it is not of God.

Seeking God in Prayer: James 1:5 assures us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, who gives generously. When faced with uncertainty, bring it before the Lord in prayer. The Holy Spirit will guide and confirm His truth in your heart.

The Witness of the Holy Spirit: Romans 8:16 tells us, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." A deep peace and assurance accompany God’s truth. If something stirs fear, anxiety, or confusion, it is time to seek clarity in His presence.

Final Thoughts and Prayer

We are called to walk in truth and wisdom. In these times, when deception abounds, let us cling to Christ, our Good Shepherd. May we train our hearts to recognize His voice and reject all that is not of Him.

Reflection Question: What steps can you take this week to grow in your ability to discern God’s voice?

"Lord, help me to know Your voice above all others. Fill me with Your wisdom and discernment so that I may walk in Your truth. Amen."
